Ultrasonic Spraying of GDL

Ultrasonic Spraying of GDL – Ultrasonic Coating – Cheersonic

The gas diffusion layers (GDL) are a fibrous porous medium that has two main functions: to ensure a uniform distribution of reactive gases on the surface of the electrodes, and the transport of electrons to or from the external electrical circuit. Gas diffusion layer (GDL) is a crucial component which is mainly responsible for the gas and water transport in any PEM fuel cell. GDL actually consists of two main layers which are macroporous substrate (MPS) and microporous layer (MPL). MPS is subsequent to the gas flow field and it generally works by providing gas diffusion through carbon paper or carbon cloth and collecting the current. MPL is generally used for the purpose of reducing the contact resistance between the catalyst layer (CL) and GDL.

Carbon is a favorable material that is capable of providing good electrical conductivity, gas permeability, elasticity and durability for PEM fuel cell components. Carbon paper or carbon cloth is used in the content of MPS of the GDL. Dual pore size distribution can be seen for the carbon cloth due to the voids between the carbon fibers. Besides carbon-based materials, the metal substrates that are made up of stainless steel, nickel or titanium mesh were also used for the MPS of the GDL. However, corrosion resistance of the metal-based materials to oxidative conditions in the PEM fuel cell may be a question. Cheersonic has developed coating processes that prvide excellent results with durable, pinhole-free coatings. And because the equipment has the advantage of extremely high liquid utilization, it can greatly reduce research and production costs.

The advantages of Cheersonic ultrasonic coating systems include:

1.Very high Platinum utilization proven in MEA fabrication; as high as 90%.
2.Non-clogging
3.Low-flow spray reduces spillage and air pollution.
4.Continuous or intermittent operation possible
5.Highly porous coatings are extremely durable, preventing cracking or peeling of catalyst layer.
6.No moving parts to wear out
7.Minimal maintenance and downtime.
8.Robust design and materials resist corrosion.
